Quiet Korea한국어

The data

Every number on this site comes from 한국관광 데이터랩 (Korea Tourism Data Lab), the official tourism-data platform operated by the Korea Tourism Organization under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Visitor volumes are estimated from anonymized mobile-network movement; spending from card transactions; popularity from car-navigation searches.

What we use, exactly:

  • Regional visitor volume — annual domestic visitors for all 17 provinces, powering the pressure chart.
  • Monthly national trend — 12 months of visitor and spending totals, powering the crowd calendar.
  • Attraction demographics — per-attraction age and gender visit shares for 719 attractions across 8 cities. Our “quiet score” is the share of visitors aged 50+; the “busy circuit” is the share aged 20–39. It's a proxy — older Korean travelers favor uncrowded, authentic places and avoid queues — and it matches on-the-ground experience remarkably well.
  • Stay duration — average time-on-site and overnight length for all 229 districts, powering Slow stays.
  • Navigation top-100 — the most searched destinations in Korean car navigation, which is how we know most of them are shopping malls.

Snapshots were exported from the Data Lab in September 2026 and are refreshed periodically. Estimates cover domestic (Korean) travelers — which is the point: they show where Koreans go, the best possible guide to where everyone else doesn't.
